Microsoft has launched Azure Information Protection (AIP), which enables you to easily classify documents both for security and taxonomy. With integrated support for popular e-mail clients, browsers and even mail servers, AIP makes sure that shared documents only gets transferred only if the recipients are allowed to read those documents at the level of classification they have.

AIP automatically keep track of the documents even outside of an organization's network boundaries. This provides you a secured environment to transfer documents between more than one user over cloud.

Earlier, Microsoft purchased Israeli startup Secure Islands, which developed technology focused on automated data protection, classification and loss prevention across a wide range of file formats. With the help of the products, you will be able to classify a document with secret, personal, and other forms of access restriction from within authoring programs.

According to an EMC study, the estimated cost of data loss to companies will be in the form of trillions. When a information is delivered via Azure Information Protection, it automatically determines whether the document should remain internal or be allowed to leave the organization. As a user, you will be able to receive notifications when the recipients outside the organization interact with the document.

AIP is a revolutionary step for security in Microsoft's quest to evolve into the world of cloud and mobility. Bret Arsenault, chief information security officer at Microsoft revealed alternative solutions which includes Cloud App Security, Customer Lockbox and Azure Identity Protection.

However, there are people who are opposed to the implementation of AIP. Greg Knieriemen, Hitachi Data Systems technology strategist added that AIP isn't ready for the big leagues. He even made a comprehensive comparison of the Hitachi Content Platform to Microsoft's new service and hinted at the implementation of additional document management features.
